China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd. (China Unicom for short) officially launched the 5G Free-mobility Private Network solution to allow the CARSI project to provide teachers and students with quick access, unified authentication, and seamless switchover. After that, teachers and students succeeding in CARSI authentication can subscribe to China Unicom's 5G Free-mobility Private Network solution.
China Unicom's 5G Free-mobility Private Network solution is intended for universities based on carriers' 5G communications technologies. It allows users to use carriers' 5G network to access the campus intranet and Internet anytime and anywhere. The China Unicom's 5G Free-mobility Private Network solution and the CARSI project are jointly developed by China Unicom, Peking University, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., and CERNET Network Co., Ltd. Peking University provides CARSI authentication, private network adaptation, and technical support for universities. After the rollout, nearly 700 CARSI member universities can quickly deploy private networks, improving the deployment efficiency of the 5G Free-mobility Private Network solution for each university.
After subscribing to the 5G Free-mobility Private Network service on the China Unicom app (Government & Enterprise - 5G Free-mobility Private Network), teachers and students can use China Unicom's 5G traffic to switch between the public and private networks without changing cards or numbers within the coverage of China Unicom's 4G/5G signals. They can access the campus intranets and Internet without logging in to the VPN. After the service is provisioned, they can access campus services and library database resources anytime and anywhere. Private network services can be provisioned in seconds.
The CARSI service scope is continuously expanding. For the first time, the service scope is expanded to the new field of carriers' 5G private networks, providing teachers and students with more convenient and personalized network access experience.
Peking University and China Unicom have carried out in-depth technical cooperation, explored 5G education private networks, CARSI technologies, and private network adaptation for universities. After in-depth discussion, the two parties have successfully completed joint development, commissioning, and testing at the beginning of this year, and achieved phased results. During this period, Peking University organized a test for about 100 users on campus. More than 70% of users reported that the network was better than VPN. This brings convenience to daily education and teaching, scientific research, and campus management, and provides important references for the implementation of 5G Free-mobility Private Network in other universities.
