Huawei Computing will pump another 5 billion yuan into building an open-source computing ecosystem over the next three years (2027–2029), Chief Strategy Officer Zhu Zhaosheng said at Huawei Connect 2026 on September 19, in a push to grow alongside partners and developers.
It is the latest big-money bet by Huawei Computing to shore up its ecosystem. The company pledged 3 billion yuan in 2024, and three years on, it is sweetening the pot once again. The move speaks to a broader shift in how the computing industry competes — from hardware to ecosystems. Chips set the ceiling on computing power; ecosystems decide how far it can reach.
To support developers at every stage — from first steps to full-fledged careers — Zhu laid out a three-phase roadmap. The first phase focuses on building foundational skills, with Huawei leaning on its Kunpeng and Ascend communities and Developer Learning Center to make knowledge easy to access and learning paths grounded in real scenarios. In the second phase, aimed at sustained innovation, Huawei offers technical and resource support, teams up with universities and companies on joint projects, and draws on excellence incubation centers, ecosystem innovation centers, competitions and open-source communities to help developers hone their skills in the field. The third phase, industry-research collaboration, backs developers through the Kunpeng Ascend Seed Program and Partner Program, providing support in resources, technology and market access to help them bridge the "last mile" from innovation to commercialization and capture real business opportunities.
