Huawei Shakes Up Management as He Gang Joins Board

Updated:2026/10/26 15:02

Huawei updated its management lineup on its official website on Oct 23, promoting He Gang, CEO of its Consumer BG, from alternate to full board director. He will continue to run the consumer business.

He Gang, born in 1973, holds a master's degree from Xidian University and joined Huawei in 1998 — one of the executives who, as the company puts it, "grew up at Huawei." He cut his teeth in wireless, rising to president of the wireless GSM & UMTS product line and head of global wireless solutions sales. In late 2011, a phone call from Yu Chengdong — "He Gang, come do phones" — brought him over to the consumer side. Over the next decade-plus, he served as president of the Consumer BG's handset product line and as chief operating officer, helping drive Huawei's leap from mid- and low-end handsets to premium flagships such as the Mate and Pura series and foldables. In April 2024, Yu stepped up to chairman of the Consumer BG and He Gang took over as CEO.

Huawei defines its board as the body ultimately accountable for corporate strategy, business management and customer satisfaction. It is charged with leading the company forward, making strategic and operational decisions, and safeguarding the interests of customers and shareholders. The weight of the roster is clear from who sits on it: Chairman Liang Hua; Vice Chairmen Xu Zhijun, Meng Wanzhou and Wang Tao; and executive directors including Zhang Ping'an and Yu Chengdong, who head core businesses. With He Gang's appointment, the consumer business now holds two board seats — Yu Chengdong and He Gang — further raising the segment's profile in group governance. Public information also shows that Peng Bo has left the board following the reshuffle.

In governance terms, the move fits Huawei's long-held belief in letting those who hear the guns call the shots. The consumer business is Huawei's closest touchpoint with customers and the backbone of its HarmonyOS ecosystem, so giving its head a full seat at the top table should help keep consumer strategy in step with the group's broader agenda.
