China Mobile Jiangsu, Huawei and Tencent Games Complete Terminal Slicing Testing

Updated:2018/8/9 10:54

Recently, China Mobile Jiangsu collaborated with Huawei and Tencent Games to complete the industry's first pilot project for lower latency in augmented reality (AR) games. Huawei Policy Control Function (PCF) was first introduced to this project to manage terminal slicing resources and maintain low latency for undisturbed AR gaming. The project verified the feasibility of using Huawei PCF to flexibly schedule terminal slicing resources for optimal user experience. It is a significant step forward in promoting the application of low-latency terminal slicing.

Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of a diverse range of Internet games. A third-party report shows that the revenue of AR and MR in 2018 is expected to reach US $3.2 billion, most of which will come from mobile AR games. And network latency will play a decisive role in delivering smooth, uninterrupted experience for mobile AR games. To reduce the latency and provide quality service experience, the collaborative pilot project adopts Huawei PCF to deliver policies to the terminal slices, which then flexibly allocate their resources based on the policies and the characteristics of Tencent Games. The project significantly improves user experience, with the average gaming latency lowered by 30.8% and the gameplay smoothness improved from 41.2% to 97%. Huawei has always been working with industry partners to promote the development and maturity of 5G standards, technologies, and industries. Huawei has the top number of 5G architecture related proposals and top number of accepted proposals in the industry and takes the lead in standardizing key architectures such as Service Based Architecture (SBA), Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), and slicing. The pilot project defines the network capability to flexibly manage the terminal slicing resources based on user service characteristics, which further encourages the development of 5G.

Yang Haisong, Vice President of Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, commented: "Huawei has been committed to providing ultimate experience to end users by innovating with carriers. This project first demonstrated the feasibility of using PCF to flexibly manage terminal slicing resources for lower latency. Such innovations can not only be used in AR game services, but also in services that have high requirements on latency, such as holographic communication, VR education, and unmanned driving. Huawei and Jiangsu Mobile will continue to collaborate in depths with verticals to provide innovative digital services for consumers and enterprise users and help carriers build new business models."
