Flexible System Design Key to 5G Radio Air Interface

To meet the 5G demands of ITU, IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group has been driving the innovation in 5G jointly with the industry chain, Wang Xiaoyun, vice chairman of IMT-2020 (5G) said at the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group on June 12.

As the most critical part in the innovation of 5G, radio air interface is the focus of the industry. Ms Wang wants to form globally unified standard of air interface in this field, and the industry is also developing toward this way.

Ms Wang thought the flexible system design, innovative technology of the radio air interface and large-scale antenna are the most central under the new standard of the air interface of 5G.

In the aspect of flexible design, frame structure will be self-contained and variable, not fixed, meeting the demands of the future application of 5G in multiple scenes; flexible waveform is able to achieve forward compatibility; flexible duplex can achieve the asymmetric design of the originator and the termination.

The radio air interface innovative new technologies mainly consist of new multiple access technology and innovative coding technology. Ms Wang said, for instance, the promotion group has realized the common application of Polar and LDPC in different scenes.

Large-scale antenna is the advantage of TDD. The innovation based on TDD will bring the industry with much higher spectrum efficiency, which becomes the key technology for 5G.
