SMG gets 3G mobile phone TV license

Updated:2011/2/12 10:36

Shanghai Media Group (SMG) now has a domestic 3G mobile phone TV license from China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

The new service will be operated by SMG's subsidiary, Shanghai BesTV.

The license allows SMG to operate an integrated broadcast and control platform as well as a content service platform called 'Oriental Mobile TV' ('Dongfang Shouji Dianshi').

Marbridge Daily reports that content is delivered by way of dedicated lines to the integrated broadcast and control platform, which in turn delivers content to the 3G network by way of a dedicated IP network.

In practical terms, this means that the smartphone becomes, in effect, a portable television set as well as everything else.

This would strengthen the growth of the smartphone in China (and will probably mean a whole slew of new models) to the position of premier computing and connecting device, which is not encouraging for the future of notebooks, laptops and other communications equipment.
