New York-listed Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd, the largest telecoms service provider in Taiwan, will start selling Apple Inc's iPhone in Taiwan on Dec. 13, the China Post reported.
The Taiwanese telecom operator expects to attract more subscribers and boost revenue with the launch of the 3G iPhone in the island, according to Lin Jen-Hon, Executive Vice President with Chunghwa Telecom.
Chunghwa Telecom said in a statement that it will offer the 8 gigabyte (GB) handset, with storage capacity for 8,000 minutes of music, free to subscribers who sign up to its NTD 2,549 (US$76.50) a month plan for two years, while the 16 GB iPhone will cost NTD 2,990 under same package.
Advance booking of the iPhone has been launched since Nov. 29 for guaranteed delivery on Dec. 13, while customers who don't preorder are able to purchase the handset on the same day if stocks are available.
The 8 GB handset and the 16 GB model can also be sold to customers without a contract, which costs NTD 26,600 and NTD 29,900 a unit, respectively. Buyers will have access to Chunghwa Telecom's third-generation (3G) and Wifi wireless-Internet networks for six months.
Shih Mu-piao, Vice President of Chunghwa Telecom's mobile business unit, refused to disclose an estimation or minimum amount of the handsets it hopes to sell.
