Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation recently released its 2025 annual report. SMIC attributed the revenue growth in 2025 primarily to an increase in wafer shipments. The number of wafers sold (converted to 8-inch equivalent logic wafers) rose 20.9% from 8.021 million units in the previous year to 9.697 million units. The average selling price (wafer sales revenue divided by total wafer shipments) was RMB 6,476 in 2025, compared to RMB 6,639 in the prior year.
In 2025, SMIC increased its monthly wafer fabrication capacity to 1.059 million units (in 8-inch equivalent logic wafers), while capacity utilization rose to 93.5%, an increase of 8 percentage points year-on-year. Despite significant growth in depreciation, the company's gross margin expanded to 22%, up 3 percentage points from the previous year.
SMIC maintained a high level of investment in research and development, with annual R&D expenses reaching RMB 5.519 billion, accounting for 8.2% of operating revenue — an increase of 1.3 percentage points compared to 2024. As of the end of the reporting period, the company had accumulated 14,511 granted patents, of which 12,621 were invention patents, and held 94 integrated circuit layout design registrations.
