China Leads Completion of First ITU-R Report on 6G Satellite Technology Trends

Updated:2026/5/20 13:15

From April 29 to May 5, the 58th plenary meeting of Working Party 4B (WP4B), under Sub-Group 4 (SG4) of the Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R), was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The report titled "Development and Technology Trends of the 6G Satellite Component," led by China, was reviewed and approved at the WP4B meeting and subsequently adopted by the SG4 meeting held on May 15.

The report focuses on research into radio interface technologies for 6G satellites, covering topics such as 6G satellite development trends, network technologies, terminal evolution, and privacy and security. The report was led by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), and jointly completed by several organizations under the coordination of Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology Co., Ltd., the domestic counterpart group leader of WP4B. Other contributing organizations include CICT Mobile Communication Technology Co., Ltd. (CICT Mobile), China Telecom Global Satellite Communication Co., Ltd., Shanghai Micro Satellite Engineering Center, and ZTE Corporation.

Since 2020, CAICT and other Chinese organizations have actively engaged in the standardization of 5G/6G satellite radio interface technologies within WP4B, promoting the internationalization of China's satellite-terrestrial integrated technology. In June 2023, at the 53rd meeting of WP4B, the Chinese delegation successfully proposed the project for "Development and Technology Trends of the 6G Satellite Component," with experts from CAICT and CICT Mobile serving as editors. The approval of this report marks a significant contribution by China's radio technology community to international standardization research and lays the foundation for the future development of 6G satellite technology standards.
