Huawei Possesses the Largest Number of Valid Global Patent Families

Updated:2022/4/27 13:21

According to the Report on Global 5G Patent Activities (2022), 5G standard-essential patents, the annual number of patent claims is increasing year by year. By December 31, 2021, 5G standard-essential patents claimed globally have exceeded 64,900, with the number of valid global patent families larger than 46,100. As the 5G Rel-17 standard is frozen and the drafting of the Rel-18 standard begins, the number of 5G standard-essential patent claims is expected to increase in the future.

The top 10 enterprises having the largest number of valid global patent families are Huawei, Qualcomm, Samsung, LG, ZTE, Nokia, Ericsson, DT, OPPO and Sharp, with 14% coming from Huawei, topping the list with a wide margin. Qualcomm occupies the second place with a proportion of 9.8%, followed by Samsung with 9.1%. Notably, only a few operators from countries/regions across the world show their traces in 5G patent claim activities. But this does not mean a majority of operators do not have any 5G standard-essential patent.
