China Telecom announced unaudited financial data for the first quarter of 2020. During the reporting period, China Telecom achieved operating income of 94.793 billion yuan, of which service income was 92.137 billion yuan, an increase of 0.7% over the same period last year. The profit attributable to shareholders was 5.822 billion yuan, 2.2% down over the same period last year. EBITDA reached 30.161 billion yuan, 0.3% down over the same period last year.
During the reporting period, China Telecom accelerated the upgrading of 4G subscribers to 5G. The number of mobile subscribers was about 337 million, of which the number of 5G package subscribers was about 16.61 million, a net increase of 12 million. The total mobile Internet traffic soared by 37.4% year on year with a rapid growth, and the decline of Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) narrowed compared with the previous year.
