China's domestic mobile phone market saw shipments total 21.150 million units in March, down 7.1 percent year-on-year, according to a report released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) on Monday.
Of this total, 5G mobile phones accounted for 19.667 million units, representing a 1.3 percent year-on-year increase and making up 93.0 percent of all shipments for the month.
During the January-March period, shipments in the domestic market reached 60.805 million units, down 12.7 percent year-on-year, of which 5G models totaled 55.468 million units, a decline of 9.1 percent, accounting for 91.2 percent of total shipments.
In March, 19 new mobile phone models were launched in the domestic market, down 70.3 percent year-on-year. Among them, 13 were 5G models, a decrease of 60.6 percent, representing 68.4 percent of all new models released during the month.
In the first three months, 79 new models hit the domestic market, down 30.1 percent year-on-year, including 48 5G models, down 23.8 percent, accounting for 60.8 percent of all new models.
In terms of brand origin, domestic-brand mobile phones shipped 17.787 million units in March, down 14.8 percent year-on-year, accounting for 84.1 percent of total shipments. All 19 new models launched during the month were from domestic brands, down 69.8 percent year-on-year.
From January to March, domestic-brand shipments reached 52.216 million units, down 14.0 percent annually, accounting for 85.9 percent of total shipments. Domestic brands launched 75 new models, down 32.4 percent, making up 94.9 percent of all new models released.
Regarding smartphone development, shipments of smartphones reached 20.087 million units in March, down 6.3 percent year-on-year, accounting for 95.0 percent of total shipments. A total of 15 new smartphone models were launched in March, down 68.8 percent, representing 78.9 percent of all new models during the month.
In the first quarter, smartphone shipments totaled 57.040 million units, down 11.6 percent year-on-year, accounting for 93.8 percent of total shipments. Some 65 new smartphone models were launched during the period, down 22.6 percent, making up 82.3 percent of all new models.
