Kimi, the AI assistant developed by Moonshot AI, announced on July 19 that it is temporarily suspending new subscriptions for consumer-facing users, citing an unexpected surge in demand that has pushed its computing infrastructure to the limit.
“Since the release of the Kimi K3 model, we have received overwhelming support far beyond our expectations—yet we are also facing an unforeseen challenge in compute capacity,” the company said in a statement. “Over the past 48 hours, user request volumes have significantly exceeded our projections and are now approaching the upper limits of our existing server clusters.”
To safeguard the experience of current subscribers, the company decided to halt new C‑side subscriptions effective immediately, redirecting all available computing resources to serve existing users and ensuring that their full entitlements remain unaffected. At the same time, Moonshot AI said it is accelerating its compute expansion at full speed. As new capacity comes online incrementally, the company will gradually reopen subscription slots until full service is resumed.
For future new subscribers, the company plans to split Kimi's core benefits—covering Kimi Web, Kimi App, and Kimi Work—into a separate package from Kimi Code benefits. This restructuring, it said, is designed to enable more precise allocation of compute resources and deliver a smoother user experience.
