Updated:2024/12/19 16:30

On December 18, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) announced that the 106th plenary session of the Radio Access Network (RAN) Technical Specification Group, recently held in Madrid, Spain, approved the first 6G standard project for the 3GPP Radio Access Network—the Study on 6G Scenarios and Requirements.

The project has received joint support from over 56 companies worldwide. China Mobile, along with US carrier Verizon, Japanese carrier NTT DOCOMO, and European carrier Deutsche Telekom, has been appointed as the co-rapporteur. The project has attracted considerable attention from the industry and will focus on studying 6G technical performance requirements, potential technological directions, and deployment scenarios. It will also coordinate with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in formulating 6G requirement specifications. The collaboration of operators from China, the US, Japan, and Europe in leading the project is expected to foster regional cooperation in 6G technology research and development, accelerate technological breakthroughs, consolidate industry consensus, and jointly establish a globally unified 6G standard.
