The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently released the economic performance of the telecommunications industry for the first half of 2024. During this period, the telecommunications industry operated steadily. The volume and revenue of telecommunications services grew steadily, with emerging business revenue maintaining double-digit growth. The construction of new infrastructure such as 5G, gigabit optical networks, and the Internet of Things progressed orderly, the number of network-connected users grew steadily, and mobile internet access traffic maintained a rapid growth momentum.
As of the end of June, the total length of optical cable lines nationwide reached 67.12 million kilometers, a net increase of 2.799 million kilometers compared to the end of last year. Among them, access network optical cables, local network relay optical cables, and long-distance optical cables accounted for 62.7%, 35.6%, and 1.7%, respectively. The proportion of local network relay optical cables decreased by 0.1 percentage points year-on-year.
As of the end of June, the number of internet broadband access ports nationwide reached 1.17 billion, a net increase of 33.54 million compared to the end of last year. Among them, fiber optic access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.13 billion, a net increase of 35.42 million compared to the end of last year, accounting for 96.6% of internet broadband access ports. As of the end of June, the number of 10GPON ports capable of providing gigabit network services reached 25.97 million, a net increase of 2.951 million compared to the end of last year.
As of the end of June, the total number of mobile phone base stations in China reached 11.88 million, a net increase of 265,000 compared to the end of last year. Among them, the total number of 5G base stations reached 3.917 million, a net increase of 540,000 compared to the end of last year, accounting for 33% of the total number of mobile base stations. This proportion increased by 2.4 percentage points compared to the first quarter.
