Huawei's Chen Haiyong: Intelligent, Open Voice Networks Boost New Calling Service Innovation

On June 4, 2023, the New Calling Industry Development Forum — hosted by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and China Association of Communications Enterprises (CACE), and co-hosted by Huawei — was successfully held during the 31st PT Expo China. At this forum, Chen Haiyong, President of the CS&IMS Domain of Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, delivered a keynote speech entitled Intelligent, Open Audio and Video Networks Boost New Calling Service Innovation. He said that Huawei's New Calling solution, with its cutting-edge architecture, helps operators build intelligent, open, and highly stable 5.5G voice networks, enable service innovation, and provide high-quality products and services to customers.

Shifting real-time communication from fulfilling basic calling needs to providing personalized service functions

Calling services have always made up the most important and most basic core services for operators, meeting users' basic communication needs. What's more, operators have built robust voice networks and developed large subscriber bases. With the rise of 5G, voice-only calling is transitioning to video, and then gradually to intelligent and interactive communication. It means that users can transmit more content during calls, and thereby enjoy brand-new calling experiences. Bolstered by 5.5G, operators' voice calling is shifting its focus from fulfilling users' basic communication needs to providing scenario-dedicated and personalized service functions for not only individuals, but also a wide range of vertical sectors, elevating calling services to a whole new level.

Building 5.5G-oriented New Calling networks to enable service innovation

Huawei developed the New Calling solution to help operators build intelligent, open, and highly stable voice networks and enable service innovation in 5.5G.

First, this solution adds intelligent capabilities to calling. This gives rise to multiple innovative services, such as visualized voice calling and fun calling, which allow users to convey emotions and express themselves more easily, as well as speech-to-text transcription, large font, and real-time translation, which bridge the gap between people from different cultures, and those who have deafness or hearing loss.

Second, this solution provides interactive capabilities. By utilizing the IMS data channel, New Calling allows data information to be transmitted during calls. This helps implement service functions such as on-screen menus, remote damage assessment, and remote maintenance, greatly improving the communication efficiency of vertical sectors.

Third, this solution uses an open architecture that separates the network from services, so as to provide open APIs for not only operators, but also enterprises and third-party developers. This helps build a vibrant developer ecosystem and enable agile innovation of New Calling services.

Making concerted efforts to promote the sound development of New Calling

Chen Haiyong pointed out that New Calling is in the early development stage, and all partners are expected to work together to overcome hurdles in the entire industry chain, from key technologies to network standards, and from chips and terminals to operators' networks. The development of New Calling will no doubt benefit more individuals, families, and enterprises, heralding a new dawn for the voice industry.
