In Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province in China, China Unicom and Huawei have transformed the Sun Valley elderly care community in China Railway's International Eco-city into the province's first 5G-powered, comprehensively sensed community. Leveraging 5G and intelligent IoT technologies, the community now offers enhanced safety, streamlined management, and improved public services.
Compact, multi-functional, 5G-enabled security patrol robots autonomously do rounds in the community on a daily basis. They boast 360° cameras, with a full field of view that is able to detect all kinds of potential security threats. Once a threat is detected, they automatically alert the management center.

In the apartment lobby, a large, clear blue screen utilizes a5G-powered health management platform to display various health metrics of the elderly residents, such as their sleep quality, AI-powered fitness guidance, personalized meal plans, and real-time monitoring data and alerts.
Gao Rui, the community owner, introducing the 5G-powered health management platform
"The 5G-powered health management platform is at the heart of the community's health services. It collects users' health data, including blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate, and biochemical markers, through wearables, small home devices, and medical equipment. This data is transmitted via the 5G network to a background database, where it is consolidated into an electronic health record," said Gao. Authorized health professionals, including health managers, nutritionists, and doctors, can access real-time user data through a dedicated app and web portal, and create or update personalized exercise, nutrition, and rehabilitation plans through the platform. Additionally, users can use 5G mobile devices to engage in online consultations with doctors and receive remote healthcare services.
Remote diagnosis and treatment via the 5G network
China Unicom's 5G network now fully covers the community, enabling the deployment of 5G smart elderly care hardware throughout homes, buildings, and community spaces. On the application layer, smart community, health, and elderly care platforms have been established. A comprehensive big data analytics and management platform, built based on the application layer, is able to send alarms in the event of a fall, make emergency calls, monitor sleep, and keep areas under surveillance, while integrating online services spanning food, housing, transportation, and health. This creates a safe, convenient, and comfortable living environment for the elderly residents.
Sun Valley has launched a one-stop elderly wellness tourism app platform based on a 5G wide area network (WAN), which offers a comprehensive range of services, covering elderly care, tourism, and health management, to simplify travel and care planning.
Sun Valley's elderly wellness tourism platform
Up to now, the platform has reached 114 wellness tourism bases in southwest China, benefiting 7.5 million elderly people. It offers more than 1,000 customized travel routes, resulting in an 82% increase in elderly travel rates, a 100% boost in service efficiency, and emergency response times reduced to just 2 minutes. The platform helps build a closed-loop industry chain in Guizhou and promote the transformation of the local tourism industry. It will expand its reach in China and beyond, particularly in countries and regions with aging populations, to provide seasonal wellness tourism services for elderly travelers, thereby fostering sustainable industry growth and improving the quality of life for all seniors.
