The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently issued a notice to initiate nationwide commercial trials for Satellite Internet of Things (IoT) services. This move marks a critical step in the industrialization of China's satellite communications and is expected to further stimulate emerging sectors such as commercial aerospace and the low-altitude economy, contributing to the development of new quality productive forces.
Enterprises applying to participate in the commercial trials are required to establish Satellite IoT systems, along with Business Support Systems (BSS), Operation Support Systems (OSS), and Management Support Systems (MSS), to conduct Satellite IoT services nationwide in compliance with laws and regulations.
The target users of the commercial trial are enterprises and public institutions that utilize satellite IoT for applications. They mainly include industry users in fields such as industry, transportation, energy, agriculture, and emergency management, which use satellite IoT for data collection and transmission.
The MIIT stated that the trial aims to enrich the supply of the satellite communications market, stimulate the vitality of market entities, enhance industry service capabilities, establish a safety supervision system, and form replicable and promotable experiences and models. It will support the safe and healthy development of emerging industries such as commercial aerospace and low-altitude economy.
According to the requirements of the notice, applying enterprises must have basic conditions such as funds, talents, and facilities, submit scientific and comprehensive trial plans, and go through frequency and station licensing procedures in accordance with the law. The trial period is two years. During this period, enterprises must fulfill responsibilities such as network security, real-name system management, data protection, and anti-fraud governance, regularly submit business data, connect to the industrial internet identification resolution system, support IPv6, and realize the whole-life cycle management.
