Taiwan-based IC design houses, including MediaTek, MStar Semiconductor, Novatek Microelectronics and ALi, are expected to see their shipments of IC solutions for smart TVs and set-top boxes (STBs) remain strong in the second half of 2011 as well as in 2012 despite slower-than-expected LCD TV shipments in the global market this year, according to industry sources.
MediaTek has been stepping up its cooperation with first-tier branded TV vendors in China to expand its share in the TV solution segment in China, pointed out the sources, noting that MediaTek's shipments of TV chips in the second half of 2011 will be higher than those shipped in the first half.
MStar has continued to roll out TV solutions, including high-end parts for 3D and Internet TVs, aiming not only to maintain its market leadership in China and other emerging markets but also to fend off competition from MediaTek, the sources indicated.
The increasing availability of cloud computing services globally is also expected to drive up demand for smart TV and STB solutions in years ahead, the sources asserted.
