China Telecom Opens 5G Pilot Base Stations in Six Cities

Updated:2017/12/7 16:25

On December 2, China Telecom opened 5G pilot base stations in Lanzhou. At present, China Telecom has launched 5G pilot base stations in six cities, namely Xiong’an, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu and Lanzhou.

On October 27, China Telecom opened the first 5G pilot base stations in Shenzhen, the pilot area was centered by Shenzhen Software Industry Base, covering Shuangchuang Park, Science & Technology Ecological Park, Shenzhen University, incubator base of University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytech University and others. In the other cities, China Mobile opened 5G base stations in Suzhou on November 10, in Shanghai on November 11, in Chengdu on December 1 and in Lanzhou on December 2.

The 5G pilot is the latest progress in cooperation between China Telecom and the world's leading network equipment and chip enterprises in exploring cooperation in 5G technology innovations. According to the schedule of China Telecom, it would carry out 5G lab and external field test in 2017 and 2018, conduct pre-commercial deployment in 2019 and realize scale commercialization in around 2020.

In the Notice on Implementation of New Generation Information Infrastructure Construction Project in 2018 launched by Notional Development and Reform Commission, it was proposed that 5G scale networking construction should be carried out in 2018, in the frequency bands below 6GHz, 5G network construction should be carried out in at least 5 cities, with at least 50 5G base stations in each city and at least 500 5G devices in the network.

In the aspect of 5G scale networking construction and application demonstration, it should focus on municipalities, provincial capital cities and main cities in the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Economic Band; the 5G network should at least cover complex urban regions and indoor areas, form continuous coverage and achieve demonstration of typical end-to-end application scenarios; 5G broadband data services with no less than 100Mbit/s speed and millisecond-level time delay should be provided; in addition, typical 5G services and applications including 4K HD video, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) should be conducted.

At the same time, the NDRC required that 5G scale networking construction and application demonstration project should be applied through China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, each operator can only apply for one project and the investment in each project should not be less than CNY 100 million.

In addition, China Telecom took the lead in realizing 5G commercialization, it has opened the first batch of 5G pilot base stations in six cities, which showed good demonstration effect. In the next stage, China Telecom will continue to cooperate with network equipment vendors and chip companies, it will also carry out research and test in combination of 5G technology and vertical industry applications with industry chains, including AR, VR, Tactile Internet, Internet of Vehicle, wireless communication applications, UAVs, power grids and other aspects.
